Day 2: The Great North Loop. Pennines & Lakes.

By 'eck lad it's grim up north, said an unknown soft southerner...

Wow! pennines were gnarly in places. Steep rocky climbs and descents. Heavily rutted slimy tracks, river crossings, stuck landrovers, sheep, chickens and cows everywhere and loads of cheery folk. I've gotta admit, I loved it.

Quintessential England...

..don't tell the king but it looks like someone stole his wood!!

This is the start of the large Pennines loop on the TET map. I kept passing the same bikers..

Until one stopped to chat by the river. He's on a brand new Honda CRF450l. Shame it's overloaded and he looks like a third world farmer on his donkey off to the market.  He was a nice guy though, up from Essex to follow the TET for the weekend.

I'm sure that's not what a landrover normally looks like!!

Round the side of this muddy field the hill side drops sharply off. Four 4x4s full of young lads were stuck and slowly picking the front one free. They were all smiling.

After the Pennines the Lake District looms on the horizon.

When I first laid eyes on the lake District I was in awe. It's staggeringly beautiful countryside and my love of the area does not wane with the passage of time.

In the words of Rory Bremner;
Location is everything, I'd rather camp in the Lake District or Scotland than sit in a five-star hotel in Frankfurt.”

..and you can understand that sentiment when the weather is this good.

It was about 7pm as i descended the hills near Keswick. As luck would have it I could see a camping ground in the valley and the proprietor came out to greet me as he heard the bike

...but before we could get down talking about staying we spotted a baby hedgehog walking towards the main the road.

I ran to grab it whilst the friendly camp site owner got his own gloves to re-home the little monster.

I showered and then ate, drank and watched Netflix in the tent, it all felt strangely homely, how long could you carry on with this lifestyle?

The view from my tent this evening.

The night was warm and dry for me, but the rain came down outside. What would tmrw bring..

Today's progress.
Red is the start, purple the end.
